September 15, 2010 was the Fourth Annual Immunization Symposium sponsored by the Kenosha Immunization Coalition (KIC).  Almost fifty health care professionals from various public and private agencies attended the free event held at the Civil War Museum in downtown Kenosha, Wisconsin.  The evening began with enjoying appetizers and visiting pharmaceutical exhibits sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, Merck & Co., Inc., MedImmune, Pfizer, Novartis and Sanofi Pasteur Inc.

The second speaker was Donna Weaver, RN, MN, Nurse Educator from the Centers for Disease Control National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.  Her presentation was titled “Pertussis Update and the Vaccines to Prevent It.”  She gave a brief background on the disease and discussed the recent increase in pertussis cases nationwide.  Ms. Weaver indicated that 71% of pertussis infection in infants is from household contacts including parents and siblings.  She discussed the importance of vaccination and presented on the different DTaP and Tdap vaccine options.
